National Harp Day 2019

Cork City Highlights

Cork’s National Harp Day 2019 celebrations took place at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork City. Glissando Harps provided non-stop harp music all afternoon in the foyer and amongst the sculptures filling the entire gallery and creating an air of surprise for the unsuspecting visitors!  A recital took place in the lecture theatre which was packed to capacity. Guest harpers included The West Cork Harp Ensemble directed by Carys Ann Evans, Glissando Harps directed by Damhnait Nic Suibhne, and some students of Oisín Morrison’s. The highlight was special guest Dr Fiachra Ó Corragáin, who launched his new website showcasing the music of Edward Bunting’s first collection of music, published in 1797. The site provides recordings of all the tunes in Bunting’s arrangements, plus downloads of the sheet music. Fiachra gave an insightful talk on these Manuscripts and treated the audience to a recital of some of the Ancient Harp pieces along with his own wonderful compositions. Special thanks to all at Crawford Gallery for all their support for the event.
